John Laxon is Education New Zealand’s Regional Director for South/South East Asia and the Middle East, being responsible for leading the New Zealand Government’s education internationalisation efforts across the region. He has been posted to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and now Singapore in this capacity. John supports New Zealand education and skills organisations to deliver service projects internationally, and leads the organisation’s efforts in attracting more than 40,000 international students from the region to New Zealand each year. John has served as a negotiator for the New Zealand Government at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, including at the Doha (2012) and Durban (2011) Conferences. He has also led the New Zealand Treasury’s policy work on climate change, natural resources, and housing. John’s experience in skills training and workforce development includes overseeing funding contracts for the vocational education system on behalf of the New Zealand Tertiary Education Commission – the body responsible for investing in New Zealand’s skills and higher education systems.
